Dental X-rays
There are two types of dental X-ray: intraoral and extraoral X-ray (OPG). Intraoral is the most common X-ray used in many dental clinics. These are teeth X-Rays which provide our practitioners with detailed imaging on cavities and the health of the root.
There are several types of intraoral X-rays which include:
- Bitewing X-rays: Displays details of the upper and lower teeth.
- Periapical X-rays: Displays an image of one tooth, from crown to the end of the root.
- Occlusal X-rays: Displays full tooth development, placement and impactions.
The extraoral X-ray provides imaging of the jaw. The objective is to monitor growth and the development of the jaw in relation to the teeth.

The importance of an OPG X-ray
An OPG X-ray is used to show the number, position and growth of all the teeth, including those that have not yet surfaced. An OPG dental scan may also reveal problems with the jawbone and the joint which connects the jawbone to the skull. This is useful if you require an assessment of your wisdom teeth, or for an overview of the teeth and the bone which support the teeth.
