Dental X-Rays & OPG X-Rays in Perth

X-ray for dental

Orthopantomogram (OPG) X-Rays & dental imaging

An X-ray helps dental practitioners visualise and confirm any dental disease such as cavities, bone loss, tooth development and associated pathology such as cysts and tumors that wouldn’t be picked up by an ordinary oral exam.

St John Dental offers X-ray and Orthopantomogram (OPG) dental imaging services. Our dentists are able to take a small, close up X-ray (inter-oral) of individual teeth or an OPG, which provides a panoramic view the upper and lower jaw on a single film. You will not feel any discomfort during either procedure.

There are two types of dental X-ray: intraoral and extraoral X-ray (OPG). Intraoral is the most common X-ray used in many dental clinics. These are teeth X-Rays which provide our practitioners with detailed imaging on cavities and the health of the root.

There are several types of intraoral X-rays which include:

  • Bitewing X-rays: Displays details of the upper and lower teeth.
  • Periapical X-rays: Displays an image of one tooth, from crown to the end of the root.
  • Occlusal X-rays: Displays full tooth development, placement and impactions.

The extraoral X-ray provides imaging of the jaw. The objective is to monitor growth and the development of the jaw in relation to the teeth.

To find out more information about the dental X-rays, contact your nearest St John dental clinic and one of our dentists will be happy to discuss the procedure with you.

An OPG X-ray is used to show the number, position and growth of all the teeth, including those that have not yet surfaced. An OPG dental scan may also reveal problems with the jawbone and the joint which connects the jawbone to the skull. This is useful if you require an assessment of your wisdom teeth, or for an overview of the teeth and the bone which support the teeth.

We have state-of-the-art X-ray technology to help with the dental imaging. This uses less radiation than a typical X-ray and images are available immediately.

At St John Dental, the cost of a dental X-ray can vary and is dependent on the type of X-ray needed. Intraoral dental X-rays are less costly due to the smaller scope of the X-ray. Whereas an OPG X-ray has a greater associated cost due to the significantly larger portion of the jaw and skull that needs to be scanned.

The total cost of your dental visit can vary depending on whether it’s a simple dental check-up or if a filling, treatment or a tooth extraction is required. For more information or to book a dentist appointment in Perth, contact one of our St John dental clinics today.
