Regular ultrasound checks available in Perth

Ultrasound scans are mostly associated with pregnancy as these scans provide an expectant mother with the first view of her unborn child. However, there are other uses for ultrasound scans. Your doctor may order a medical ultrasound if you are experiencing pain, swelling or other symptoms that require an internal view of your organs.

Apollo Health’s ultrasound department is run by Global Diagnostics, a leading international provider of diagnostic medical imaging services. Global Diagnostics offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging services including ultrasound treatment and more. With state-of-the-art equipment, you're in the best hands. All referrals are accepted and ultrasounds are done at the Joondalup and Armadale clinics in Perth.

What are ultrasounds and why are they necessary?

An ultrasound scan is a medical test that makes use of high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from the inside of your body. An ultrasound allows your doctor to see if there are any issues with your organs, vessels and tissues without needing to make an incision anywhere. Ultrasounds are also known as sonographies – a technology that also helps the military to detect planes and ships. Ultrasound uses no radiation unlike other imaging techniques, therefore it is the preferred method for viewing a developing foetus during pregnancy.

To book an ultrasound examination, you need a referral from your doctor. Based on the referral, which stipulates what type of examination you require, we request that you refrain from eating and drinking for a certain period. Some tests may require a full bladder, and we will instruct you to drink a certain amount of water. No matter what examination you book for, we will ensure that you are given the correct instructions for preparation.

All ultrasounds are undertaken by a sonographer who is accredited by the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry – ASAR). Once the scan is completed, it is interpreted by a radiologist who specialises in examining medical images.

The process of performing an ultrasound is the same regardless of the type of scan you need. A gel substance is applied on the skin specifically in the area that needs to be scanned. This water-based gel allows for clearer transmission of sound waves between the transducer and your body.

While the sonographer is applying pressure, he or she may ask you to change positions slightly or to hold your breath, in order to produce better quality images.

In some instances, a radiologist may be involved in the scanning process to talk to you and explain the imaging accurately.
